I understood the legal rights needed for gay partners but I didn't understand the need to force churches to marry them.

Churches are not required to marry anyone, in the US at least. Also churches do not hold the legal power of marriage. It's granted by the state and anyone can become a justice & a priest must be granted the power to conduct a legal marriage by the state. Christian churches claiming to own marriage (in general) is ridiculous as marriage predates Christianity.
