Yeah it's a pretty big problem in the states. I'm sure it exists in the UK to but I have gotten a much more, shall we say, willingness to tell people to fuck off there, compared to the US where if you tell someone you think something is a scam they'll start insulting you for being stupid. Quite sad, very much the typical cult mentality.

It's mostly pyramid scheme type stuff. Some knife company tried to recruit me out of highschool but it was a typical MLM type deal. I buy the knives from a guy that buys his knives from a different guy and try to find other guys to sign up to be salesmen to buy the knives from me. Gotta get something like 100 subsidiaries to do well at it. Basically.

Level 1 one dude, rich.

Level 2 100 dudes, well off.

Level 3 10,000 dudes. Not so great.

Level 4 1,000,000 ooh boy

Level 5. 100,000,000, 1/3 people in the US are knife salesmen.

Level 6 10,000,000,000 ah shit gotta call some aliens and see if they wanna buy our knives.

Basically, they get people with emotional be your own boss get rich quick schemes, and it works because American math education is pretty shit. Plus it feeds well into the typical Americana self made man type deal.

It sucks if you've got friends or family in it, they'll constantly try to sell you shit. They buy all this crap they can't flip and get increasingly desperate.

Think essential oils are the big one in the states now? Kinda merges with the health nuts, actually lots of snake oil mlm come to think of it. The magical ancient elixir necessary for health is somehow only made by this one guy. Hmmm.

Years ago, a coworker tried to get me into what was essentially Amway. To humor him, I went to a few of their “meetings”, which were basically like struggle sessions.

One thing that struck me about most of the people there was they all seemed to think that working for a living was somehow beneath them, while at the same time being some of the most unimpressive people you’ll ever meet.

I've been to a few. They're usually enjoyable for me but I have a perverse joy in essentially being an asshole and roughing them up a bit intellectually. They're quite good at what they do though very difficult to engage in reasonable discussions.

One I went to I was curious so started asking a bunch of questions about how it worked then was taken aside and basically said it's rude for new people to ask questions. Yeah lol sure. If you can't answer the new people's questions doesn't that mean you've not prepared good answers for the basic shut people will ask?

Eh, there isn't much point in arguing with these people when they're convinced. It's hard too, some of the nicest people I know, just really pleasant and generous people really get sucked into them and it's almost painful going in and crushing their dreams by explaining basically, all that shit they said are stupid concerns that everyone who is in the know laughs at how silly they are, that's the special coat that only smart people can see mate, you're smart right?

My ex-SIL got suckered into one of the makeup ones. She can't hold any real job but thought she was going to make money selling makeup online out of her filthy apartment.

Spent probably $1000 on a 'startup kit' and sold nothing.

There are a lot of similarities between MLMs and the gender deception for me. Naive people lovebombed and sold a fantasy for the benefit of other people who profit off of them.
