that's why I was never too fond of people invoking Poe's Law: yeah, it was a joke, but you've just buttressed a narrative that the Black Death arrived a century early and every record was hushed up/Black Americans weren't brought over from Africa/European women only gave birth to female clones until the patriarchal invasions of 2000 BC

Exactly. Poe's Law has a corollary: The invoking of a joke/troll/satire will make two people come into existence: One who sincerely, unironically believes that, and one who sincerely, unironically believes something so insane that it makes the satire damn near conservative.
