I wouldn’t normally link an article from Spiked, they’re perennial contrarians and I’m fairly sure that if transgenderism were the minority opinion they would side with it (they are after all the same people, Living Marxism, who sided with the Serbs during the Balkans war and lost a libel case when they claimed journalists had fabricated the genocide and other war crimes). But, this review is pretty amusing.

Remember when oppression meant the government brutally denying you the rights and freedoms enjoyed by everyone else? Now it means blokes agonising over whether or not to paint their nails. Seriously. In his new book None of the Above: Reflections on Life Beyond the Binary, nonbinary writer Travis Alabanza cites this dilemma as proof of the ‘oppression [of] the gender binary’. He introduces us to Steve, a man who had ‘wanted to paint his nails for years’. But he didn’t because, like the rest of us cis squares, he’d been conditioned into ‘upholding the gender binary’ which says men don’t do that. One day, though, after seeing one of Alabanza’s theatre shows, Steve plucks up the courage to paint his nails neon yellow. Alabanza is moved by this brave strike against the forces of oppression. ‘My urge was to hug him’, he writes. Free at last! Thank God Almighty, free at last!

Lol. All the emos and goths I knew in school painted their nails. Didn't make them any less male as far as I knew, just men who painted their nails. Some people just enjoy making their own problems.

At least the goths got pussy.

my daughter insists on painting my toenails. I don't see any reason not to let her since it makes her happy. I guess I'm a gEnDeR FuCkEr.

Awww That's adorable. Have def seen some male friends who're fathers have their hair up in pigtails and their nails done in pink because their daughter wanted to play beauty spa with them. Anyone asks they just laugh and mention their kid.

Like all anyone is going to think is that you're a good parent, that's if they even notice or care that your nails are done. I genuinely don't know anyone who would make such a hullabaloo out of something so minor.

[–]CanisRexbiologically successful 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

nah, don't be a shitdick - i'm making sure i instill in her how disgusting that would be. incidentally, i have a neighbor named tyrone. the only black person in my neighborhood, and you know what he does? He sits in his chrysler 300 and smokes weed while blasting rap at the highest volume at all hours of the day and night.

Yeah. Heck, I've had to paint my nails in order to cover up some psoriasis in the nailbed and make them look normal. Heck, sometimes I'd put my hair in pigtails because the hair just goes better there. And yet, I'm still a male and recognize myself as such. No matter what happens, it just IS.

Yeah, but why do you wear the gingham dress eh?

[–]LyingSpirit472 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Well, I have to coordinate, don't I?

[–]Haylstorm 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Like honestly, at this point the only people who care is yourself. People see a lot weirder out there in this day and age and let's be real most of us are too wrapped up in our own lives to care if a stranger is doing that. Like pigtails and nail paint the worst I think is probably "someone is having a stag do, hope they have fun" Pretty sure they all identify as men still too lol.

Oh my god! I can't paint my nails because I am male! I am so oppressed!

[–]IridescentAnaconda 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Well you could. It's just that people would think you were weird.

I used to have meetings with a VP-level guy who painted his fingernails. In all other respects he seemed normal, certainly he was very competent at his job. I thought it was weird, but that's about it.

Oh woe is me. Truly my plight is worse than that of the slaves. I am not free to paint my nails without people thinking I'm weird. What a cruel and horrible world.

Al Pacino literally paints his nails just so people know he's an artist sort of person.

Because he doesn't want to dress or act like a clown to show that.

He can get away with it because he'll give you an offer you can't refuse.

i gotta admire them for being willing to print the letters of the people they criticize (like grace lavery). it's honorable and also has the added bonus of giving them the rope to hang themselves with.

also the passage about narcissism is just chef's kiss. this guy has the best beatdowns. he's right on the money.
