Disagree with u/jet199 's take. It's more than class warfare. For me, where I'm from in the U.S. is very racially segregated, to the point that there are marked differences in the personalities of whites and the majority race. I personally hated hanging around whites where I'm from because their personalities were generally rancid. All my friends were the majority race and I was resentful that whites, including my own family, were very racist to them. The majority race was also a bit racist to me, but it was very mild and I felt bad about my friends having to go through a more extreme version. Also, while non-whites have a lot of legitimate struggles in the U.S., sometimes whitey is used as a scapegoat when that isn't the real issue. So it's easy to instill guilt that way.
TLDR: culture and ignorance all around.
edit: I am white.

The majority race was also a bit racist to me
But that was okay because of their race.

It wasn't okay, but it was mild compared to the kind of racism they faced from whites.

What was the reason for the racism from whites?

Idk if it was made clear but I am white. My family used to tell me I couldn't be around the majority race because they were all members of [insert gang] which was completely false.

Being in a gang or not is irrelevant, as is the reason your family lived there in the first place. The reason to not be around them is because they're a non-White corruption.
