Google and Apple clearly have monopoly power with their app stores, not allowing people to install their own software. They need the Microsoft Internet Explorer treatment.

Android allows several alternative app stores, such as F-Droid. The Android platform has become pretty hostile to developers, regardless of the store. Developing for iOS is a nightmare, so much due to the store and requirements for developer signing alone, it is hard to gauge the rest.
