I looked this up recently and found a figure of between 35-45 million, but it is true that Mao is likely the single individual responsible for the most human deaths not simply in the 20th century, but in all human history. The only debate is if you look at all deaths in WWII on all sides, which is higher, but Mao is by far the number one mass killer of his own people when a country is officially "at peace."

It's also been the case that Chinese records have only slowly been made available to people researching this question. For decades, China kept the data from the outside world.

The archives were slowly being pried open when Xi Jinping slammed them shut. We won't know the truth for another generation or longer.

The main way we have of knowing how many people were killed by communists is looking at what world population growth should have been, and looking at the gap.

it's also worth looking at who was killed not just the total number, who did mao go after during the cultural revolution, intellectuals, teachers, students. Why? To make china more pastoral, to support farmers? I posit it was to purposefully dumb down the country so they are easier to control. Years later we have china basically working as slave labor in harsh conditions but they are very dumb and compliant and not likely to rise up, altho some in Hong Kong are trying. But it has me worried about the rights demonization of teachers, academics, liberal intellectuals, people with high IQs. But also the left supports low IQ black people who are breeding faster than white people. Demonization of cops. Media supports the lowest common denominator thots, youtubers, tiktok idiots, egirls, society is crumbling. I believe they have learned from what Mao did, we might have a cultural revolution here brewing.
