I can appreciate the peddling thing for many reasons, but IMO, you might as well go with another simpler, more practical option. I don't know about price, but I'd guess some could be about the same. For a decade a decade ago at Burning Man I saw many variations and had serious gadget-envy. A generator and/or battery with MANY emergency functions. Some were exceptionally clever and full featured (emergency lights, tire pump, radio, tools, etc). Some were basic and cheap.

I have one of those battery things. You have to make sure it's charged and it only gives you one or two jumps and then it's too weak to jump again. The compact generator is a good idea. If you keep it in good working order and run it to test before you go on a trip. Mechanical type device still seems like a good idea to me though.

If you've got the means for extra gear.

Best option for it would be a way to attach it to spinning things - from a wind or water or bicycle or car tire or whatever. Maybe drag it around behind you.
