And yet we don't see mentally ill walking around Japan thinking they are a wolf in a woman's in a means body...It's not the anime at work here.

Oh we do see them. Hell the western media is obsessed with them but the spin is "look at this cool eccentric" rather than "look at this brave and stunning warrior in the battle for equality".

Thing is Japanese society is largely "oh look a weirdo I better ignore them and mind my own business so he won't cause me trouble" vs the western attitude of "Oh look a weirdo this is my chance to confront the evils of the world and signal my virtue to the masses"

Perhaps it's better to say Calvanism and it's consequences have been a disaster to the European social order?
