I need to get the updated version of the Newspeak dictionary.

The number 0 is now related to black. And now you are not allowed to change a variable to zero, because it is associated with black-face.
Number 88 and such are now related to extreme right, so you have to write it as 87+1.
free() is not allowed. Because it is related to free speech.
free(#black) is allowed, but gives a segmentation fault.
Type int is not allowed, because talking about intelligence is racist.
String B or String J, is not allowed. But String W is.
true is not allowed, because the left now dictates us what is true.

Process.KillAllChildren() is still allowed.

I couldn’t keep up with the hourly editions. Even after adding a few more postboxes, each morning I’d come out to find a pile of editions delivered to my front lawn.

I'd agree but if you just look at the article the replacement terms are actually better.

some are better, but too many options and too many variations could lead to even more chaos.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Excellent point, and I agree that some were better and some less gooder - however I don't think they were supposed to be universal replacements, rather be specifically utilized under specific cases. I'm guessing only a few might be more broadly embraced and the others will either fall into oblivion or be very specific.

But "master" and "slave" don't have racial connotations. They are just neutral English words. If this is what Linus spends his day pissing about with it speaks very ill of the quality of the project. FreeBSD looks interesting again.

[–]Trajan 16 insightful - 4 fun16 insightful - 3 fun17 insightful - 4 fun -  (6 children)

FreeBSD is infested. A while back they adopted the Geek Feminism code of conduct, which is as bad as one might imagine. It had a long list of the usual SJW lingo, such as ‘ Comments that reinforce systemic oppression ’ along with a ban on the dreaded virtual hug. They do seem to have since then reverted to something more sane, potentially because people quit and donors made it clear they would be taking their money elsewhere.

Not sure what it’s like there these days. I walked away after that nonsense.

In June of 2020 they had developers vote on the situation. See https://www.mail-archive.com/freebsd-announce@freebsd.org/msg00965.html

Only 4% favoured keeping that abomination of a code of conduct. 63% went with the LLVM code of conduct, with 33% opting for a Go-derived CoC. It's worth noting that the LLVM version includes political belief along with the identity categories. It also lacks the text stating that taking any action is at the discretion of the project. This is important because the Geek Feminism CoC, from which the FreeBSD CoC was drawn, explicitly states that they reserve the right to not act on complaints if the complainant's identity is insufficiently oppressed. Although not stated in that FreeBSD CoC, it was reasonable to assume it would matter given the use of left-wing identitarian concepts throughout the document. The Go CoC does not include political beliefs, but is still far less reeking of identity politics than the CoC FreeBSD forced through back in 2018. In short, the developers spoke and overwhelmingly rejected identity politics.

This is a far better choice and certainly less overtly based in identity politics. I'm glad they decided to let normal people have a say. The feminist CoC was shoved through to the objections of many users and developers. The FreeBSD lists became a culture wars battleground, and the admins of the Reddit sub were hammering down dissent. I'll give FreeBSD another chance, and will drop it again if there's ever a hint that they'll be instituting political purity tests for people who just want an operating system.

Edit: current situation

[–]Trajan 11 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

They're really not. Bear in mind these directions are for code and documentation pertaining to the kernel, and that's not exactly grandma using a system for FaceBook. People who need to encounter these terms already understand them from the context of their use (e.g. slave and master in relation to IDE) in the same way that sound engineers and psychologists understand the meaning of 'bias' in their respective fields. Nothing has been improved. We know why these changes were made, and this is the tip of the iceberg. SJWs will continue to push for changes to suit their never-ending stream of complaints. The only solution is to very quickly tell them to fuck off and be neo-Marxists somewhere else.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I'll agree to disagree on the first moot parts, but I wholehearted agree that this is the tip of the slippery slope iceberg and sadly fear the worst is yet to come - and while we're all bitching about this and that they're making profound policy choices that will affect us far greater. The worse this noisy social engineering bullshit is the worse their draconian measures will be. "Look over here at my waving hand while my other one is taking your wallet or stabbing your back."

It's not just neo-Marxists - it's also the progressives, centrists, anarchists, and right who stand by and do nothing.

[–]Trajan 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

At least one problem I see is a failure to call this out until it’s already hit a critical mass. The bigger picture solution will need to come from a larger number of normal people experiencing social justice in full bloom, and the recent BLM/Antifa lootfest has been a boon. The transgender mania, particularly with women and children being affected, also helps.

Linus has a choice: either go along with this or accept that his daughter is mentally ill. I can understand why a parent might deceive themselves rather than accept the latter.

LMAO, this is hilarious.... Why does her opinion matter, did she also develop a kernel like her daddy? Nope. No wonder why these people are against merit.

Her wealthy family explains why she got in to feminism. After all, she has to find some way to become oppressed despite having opportunities most people will never see. Even if she's talented in her own right, which is quite possible, we know why her signature matters. Daddy's the Linux guy. That's apparently why the opinion of this spoilt little lady matters.

[–]AFutureConcern 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's not better.

Changing the terms validates the idea that terminology can be "harmful". In reality, nobody ever got hurt because the word "slave" was used in more than one way. But now any old books or any of the other places the word "slave" is used will be viewed as "racist" and bad.

This can only escalate.

[–]book-of-saturday 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We don't need a list in the first place, it's just enabling more of this neomarxist bullshit.

[–]filbs111 13 insightful - 2 fun13 insightful - 1 fun14 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Disagree. In any situations where the new "recommended" terminology actually makes more sense, developers were free to choose words like that already. This limits the ability to choose the banned words where they are the best option, and if existing instances of these words are changed, that will serve to confuse anyone with existing knowledge of the system, or who looks at existing documentation.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Good points.

I agree that established norms are comfortable and changing them is disruptive.

I also agree that no terms should every be banned. Censorship is stupid.

However, I still think after folks get used to the more specific terms it will be better.

[–][deleted] 13 insightful - 3 fun13 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

What is so offensive about the terms anyways? You have to be a special snowflake trigglypuff type of person to get offended by these terms. You don't cater to these nutty people.

Even if the new terms sound better, it can cause confusion to have too many terms for the same thing.

[–]_XEAL_ 1 insightful - 3 fun1 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

If they're so offended by terms that weren't meant to be offensive, let's go full offensive now. "Slave" and "blacklist" are now "nigger" and "niggerlist".

I wish I could phisically shove their political correctnes up their rectums.

This is obviously just a nod to the BLM protests, but a lot of the proposals make more sense. "Blocklist" is a lot easier to understand than "Blacklist", and the same goes for "Passlist" and "Whitelist". If you don't know anything about computers, you won't know what a "Blacklist" is, but if it's called a "Blocklist" you'll figure it out pretty quickly.

[–]itsoktobewhite 22 insightful - 3 fun22 insightful - 2 fun23 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Blacklist is common term outside of computing.

[–]Trajan 14 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Blacklist is a very commonly understood term. If you understand it, and most people do, whitelist is something you’ll figure out pretty quickly. Passlist is a very uncommon term. Here’s a hint: try typing blacklist, whitelist, passlist, and blocklist on a phone or computer. Notice the last two words have squiggly red lines under them?

Also, what does passlist mean? Things can pass? Things have passed a test? Things that can or should be passed somewhere? Blacklist is understood by most people, computer experts or not. Blocklist is novel, yet easy enough to understand. Passlist is more obscure, so why throw out long-used and inoffensive terminology for the sake of virtue signalling to maniacs?

A Google search for '"passlist" and computing' returns 310,000 results, with most of them referring to passwords or passing exams. '"Whitelist" and computing 'returns 6,070,000, with all first page results clearly referring to whitelisting. '"Blocklist" and computing' returns 495,000 results, with results showing that it's a term used more commonly in managing spam than the normal use of blacklist. '"Blacklist" and computing' returns 6,020,000 results, with the first page results clearly describing the concept under discussion.

In summary, these new terms have little uptake and don't even describe the same concepts as the original terms. It'd make as much sense as decreeing that floppy disks shall now be known as 'plastic enclosed magnetised disc storage'.

Edit: Google fun

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 5 fun1 insightful - 4 fun2 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

I like the description of the action in those new terms. If you don't like Passlist, how about Bunlocklist? ;P

[–]slushpilot 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I don't know that it's any easier to understand since they're just technical words that everyone gets to know, and they're not complex concepts. "Blacklist" has existed for centuries, some say Henry VIII. Besides, doesn't blocklist sound like the thing that runs bitcoin? How is that less confusing?

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 5 fun1 insightful - 4 fun2 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

Initially I thought the same until I looked at the list. The new technical terms are more specific than "goodlist/badlist" which is essentially what they were, except using white and black, which is an extra hue of confusion, not to mention perceived racial bias. The new terms remove all the misperceptions and clarify much better, and if you don't know which kind of fundamental block it is then that term is not for you.

[–]Spaceplone 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

were the terms "Master" and "Slave" ever accurate descriptions of stuff's relationship in tech? Especially with things like IDE drives?

[–][deleted] 17 insightful - 2 fun17 insightful - 1 fun18 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, they made/make sense in the drive context - but also in any other context in which one object/entity is giving all the commands, and the other object/entity is only able to follow orders.

[–]StBlops2cel_is_Lord 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

It is common in sound engineering, pertaining to amplifiers

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Python replaced those terms years ago, back in 2018, with multiple terms depending on the situation. I program primarily in Python, and can say it makes a lot more sense.

I'm not experienced with IDE drives (or drives at all), so I can't say.

    Copyleft licenses are Software Bolshevism.

The GPL was literally written by a person of Jewish descent who looks like Karl Marx.

Much like in real life, this cultural rot has allowed the OS to fall into the hands of corporations, government agencies, the Chinese and their mentally unstable assets.

    [–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

It's not Software Bolshevism if people do it voluntarily. It's an alternative option in a world where the "official" narrative is forced on us more than ever now. Do you ONLY want everything to be copyrighted? Do you have other alternative solutions?

What do you consider copyright licenses?

Copylefts and copyrights are useless without an army of lawyers.

Doesn't matter what they look like, or their heritage. The ideas matter.

I agree that it's a terrible and critical problem about who own GitHub, GitLab, etc etc etc - and how much MicroSoft, Google, etc are buying their way into all the "open-source" non-government organizations.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

    Don’t you see the parallels?

The power of the state being subverted to enforce “freedom” and “equity” rather than “evil” concepts such as property.

The sacred text that can only be properly interpreted in the original language.

The rules that specify every single aspect of interaction with the code and with the License.

The division it sets between the GPL, supreme over all, the intelligentsia class who submit to the GPL and the underclass of users who owe everything to their superiors.

Free Software is their Judeo-Christian and their Dictatorship of the proletariat.

Look into the names behind the licenses and projects.

The honor-based brother-bond licenses will have a kind of name behind them while the authoritarian entitlement-based relicensing-requiring ones will have another.

You can say it is their culture or being raised in a Kibbutz with Bernie Sanders if you want.

I remember when they started talking about making word changes in github. I knew it was over then. Few years forward I go to this 100% tech conference, and guess what? many of the topics were about feminism, team toxicity, unconcious bias, and so on. Not even technical topics.

Neomarxists have leaked from humanities to engineering. Linus loves to be an asshole and be all tough, yet here he is, bending like coward to neomarxists; just like the rest of the clown SJW world we live in.

Also I don't understwand why some women think they have to become communists to be feminists.

    [–]dashiefan 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You don't need to change terminology for some PC reasons. Why would one be offended by the current names? The words "blacklist" and "whitelist" have NOTHING to do with race. I don't think you would meet many (if any) people who would even think of races when they hear those words.

And "master" and "slave"... I mean, I'm not a fan of those terms (for non-SJW reasons, mind you), but they aren't offensive. They are just words that are being used non-offensively, and they seem to get the point across well enough.

I mean, I definitely prefer the new terms, but the motive behind the change is hypersensitivity. And these changes aren't as major as many other things, but you hear a lot about people doing stupid or useless stuff due to being offended over stuff that doesn't even affect them. This terminology was probably not even supposed to be offensive.

I don't know about you man! Whenever I am blacklisting a kernel module in Linux I can think of nothing else but Black Lives Matter. And if I have to white list the modules I can only think of Scandinavian blondes.

Don't even get me started on the fantasies of dominance that overcome me when I have to configure a Master Slave DNS Server. FUCK! Lick my boots you filthy slave!

I need to get away from Linux before it destroys my life.

Just about as impactful as getting rid of the Syrup lady.

Meh it’s stupid but it’s pretty petty and inconsequential so I’ll choose to not care.

There was an outcry in Canadian universities last year over the faculty members using the word “chief” in their job titles. First Nations students said it was appropriating the word chief used by tribal leaders.... despite the fact that no aboriginal language uses the word chief and that the word itself is rooted in old French chef for leader....

Going back and replacing or updating code for this reason is a complete waste of time. Mandating other people adhere to these requirements for their future projects is authoritarian and a slippery slope. Some people changing terminology in their OWN code and projects, go right ahead that is their choice. Forcing these requirements on to open source projects or trying to force on to the entire open source community through these ridiculous threats of deplatforming and blackmail that is synonymous with these efforts, is authoritarian and a slippery slope.

Seriously, why on earth are we supposed to remove these common words and numbers? You’re letting the evil win by surrendering these words to them! Wouldn’t it make more sense to fight to reclaim them rather than live without them?!

meh, the old terms are better, their just fixing things that arent broken, cause their feelz, lul

      [–]book-of-saturday 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

And now techincal people with have to deal with 2 different terms for the same concept. They really didn't think things through. What happens to all the old documentation? who will change it? Karl Marx's ghost? What happens to hard books, do we burn them? It's like communists never learned that words can have context or do they really think master hard drives opress slave hard drives?

Would it be possible to revert this change with a custom patch or equivalent?

who didn't see this coming? with insecure subhumans like niggers and kikes in tech surely nothing's about coding anymore it's only about whining
