I liked Nanette a lot. It wasn't really very funny - it was barely stand-up comedy at all, more of a TED Talk about stand-up comedy - but it was a really good one. Lots of insights about joke construction and about, of all things, art history. Never felt an urge to turn it off, and was glad I had watched it when I was done.
What made it good was it was about stuff.
There are too many identity comics who are like "I'm this thing. Ain't that fuckin' crazy? Some of you are this same fucking thing. Ain't that crazy, that we're all, like, the thing? Some people are different from us, but we have things in common with each other because we're different from those people. I said god DAMN!"
That is not funny or interesting. That isn't really... anything.
