In the event of a collapse of the magnitude you are preparing for, fiat currency would have no real exchange value, you would be looking at a barter economy. You might be able to use cash this way for a while, but people will quickly catch on that cash is worthless.

I suspect goods would change hands at gunpoint (or knifepoint). A true cashless society...

Yes there would definitely be goods changing hands in this way as well. Would much rather have a gun and ammunition than a pile of cash.

This sub is about stuff that happens on Reddit. We have a s/Preppers sub.

Also, unless you wrote this you should cite your source.

Personally I have $7 and whatever change is lying around. If the electricity is not working, gas pumps aren't working. Without fuel the most precious thing is fuel. Back when Katrina hit we had people offering us hundreds of dollars and fancy jewelry just for a ride, but gas was literally priceless. Money will be worthless.

City man: Here is a $2,000 Krugerrand.

Farmer: Here is a $2,000 chicken.

Stocking up on cash is like stocking up on Beanie Babies.

If the grid goes down, cash is going to be worth less than toilet paper.

It'll be a barter economy, so the key valuables will be canned goods and shotgun ammo.
