There are tons of lonely, socially inept people who behave like that in real life so I don't doubt they do it online. Attractive retail workers, waitresses and especially strippers have problems with obsessive customers all the time. They delude themselves into mistaking the girl's customer service attentiveness for some kind of mutual attraction and it often results in stalking and sometimes something much worse.
