It's hard to pin down trends over time, but this article points to some telling statistics. Lesbians are only 16% of all self-ID'd LGBTQA+GHJHLASFHLSA, and of those, 69% of them are over the age of 40. This suggests a decrease in younger lesbians 'coming on-line'. Young women who might have used to ID as lesbian are now more likely to call themselves bisexual or queer or genderfluid or whatever. Being 'lesbian' just isn't cool anymore (not that it ever really was). Most trans are male-to-female, but the rate of female-to-male has been exploding of late, to the point where even the mainstream media has somewhat picked up on it. There are a lot of reasons for this, mostly having to do with confused teenage girls spending too much time on the internet watching yaoi porn and fetishizing gay male relationships. Women in anime/porn, on the other hand, are treated...not very well. So the aforementioned teenage girl is repulsed from the idea of womanhood. Plus the whole gender/sex dialogue has gotten so fucking stupid, any girl who leans toward 'butchness' gets told she must just be a 'man inside'.
