By "direct democracies," do you mean the Nordic social democracies? They're nice because they're full of Nordic people (for now). But when a referendum goes against the elite agenda, it simply gets overruled. Voting is a feel-good measure at best, so you can pat yourself on the back as oligarchs get everything they wanted anyway. Did the Swedes vote to get flooded with Sub-Saharan "refugees"? No, it's just that the Bonnier family that owns the Swedish media wants to see these Northern Europeans wiped from the earth.

No, I mean first and foremost Switzerland. Lybia used to have such a system as well, but that's all gone now.
There must be other nations with direct democracy but Switzerland is the best example I know of.
