Yes, it's possible to be out to some people (that you trust), but not your family. I'm fully out of the closet right now to anyone who needs to know, but my maternal grandma is an exception. She wouldn't hate me, but I don't want to have her spend her last years praying for me to be straight and worrying her head over my salvation.

My ex girlfriend was out to her friends but not her immediate family, until I started dating her. Then she had to come out to them and introduce me at the same time. I'm not sure if it was easier or harder that way. We were worried about them disowning her or not helping with her college, or forbidding her from seeing me, but they did none of those things, thankfully. I can't promise it will be the same for you, but sometimes parental love wins over.

Anyway, I'm not sure what exact advice I had for you, but you're not alone in this.
