It was founded by someone who later realized she was bisexual. She took herself off the sub because she didn't think she should lead a lesbian sub as a bisexual.

Other mods came and went, including some who left and founded LesbianActually. Freya and Molly (current head mods) were once suspended by former mods. There have been repeated calls for them to resign over the years. Freya is trans, Molly is more vocal of the two, and they're dating / have dated.

When the sub went private a year (or less?) ago they added like a dozen new mods upon reopening, most of whom are trans.

Quick edit: it's important to note a mod can only be removed by someone with longer tenure than them. LA mods were once asked by members to come back to AL, but they refused unless Freya and Molly stepped down.

2nd edit: someone linked below the thread discussing Freya and Molly's suspension. It's pretty old now so if there are deleted comments you can change your URL from reddit to removeddit to see them.

3rd edit: thread about Freya and Molly dating https://www.reddit.com/r/actuallesbians/comments/1jdqba/an_introduction/

Thread about the straight male mod situation. AndyWarwheels is one of the mods who left AL to found LA https://www.reddit.com/r/actuallesbians/comments/4v2zml/potential_change_in_leadership/

If you change the url from reddit to removeddit you may be able to recover a few deleted (blue) or removed (red) comments.

I miss the days when non-lesbians felt like they were morally obligated to respect lesbian spaces and not try to keep a label that was not a good fit for them

There was even a straight male mod for a while. He primarily helped with CSS stuff in the background because he had a lot of mod experience the others didn't. But after a bunch of mods abandoned ship to create LA it inadvertently left him in charge.

People found out, he asked users what they wanted to do because he didn't want to just abandon AL without leadership People asked for a full mod reelection, including wanting Freya and Molly to step down. Straight guy left but Freya and Molly refused to step down.

Those two sound like real jems.

Oh also, Molly at one point told another user "kys" around the time the sub went private. After it opened back up a bunch of people wanted the mods to address it and their comments kept getting removed.

Here's a couple top comments that got left up discussing it:

You'll need to edit the reddit URL to "removeddit" to see some of the deleted/removed comments.

Wow. Supporters of Molly calling those who called into question telling a user to kill herself “over-sensitive” when acknowledgements of biological sex and homosexuality see considered literal violence/resulting in murder apparently,

I wish that sub and their mods could be massively exposed without censorship so people can see what they truly are

Oh, I loved that drama. Watching everyone trying to cover up for Molly was fantastically awful.

What a drastic change...it went from "she didn't think she should lead a lesbian sub as a bisexual" to the place being overrun by trans.

Just wow.

Why don't they just name the sub AT and let lesbians subs moderated by other lesbians exist in peace

You know, I would love it if we could get like a reunion episode of all these users and find out what they think of the way lesbian reddit has gone down. I feel like a majority of the users that are not still currently moderators have left lesbian reddit altogether, but it would be interesting to me to have all former AL, TL, LA and LU mods in one thread to express their true feelings about it all.

(I might have an internet drama problem but that's neither here nor there.)

It's certainly a drama rabbit hole to look up the mod history. And that's just stuff that's still publicly posted, I'd love to hear what things are like behind the scenes or what went down in deleted threads I haven't seen.

[–]mangofruit 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes. I kind of wish I had been enough of an involved reddit citizen to have been made a mod somewhere so I could get behind the scenes and see everything. Curse my dislike of most internet interactions.

All I really remember is the creator realized she was bisexual, left and for a while everything was pretty copacetic but eventually there was some massive drama surrounding Freya(? I think) doing coke off a strippers ass and then a huge melt down over drug usage and Freya and Molly's relationship where both of them acted inappropriately as mods and got "probation" (which imo was the last real attempt by AL to have mods with any accountability or consequence).

Then there was a bunch of issues when Freya became head mod, with censorship and not having any kind of open moderation. The big split was when there had been drama for weeks over people being banned with no explanation and posts that talked about wanting less trans and bi issues and more lesbian focus being removed. That was when it started to be a thing that lesbians we're allowed to say they didn't want cock which obviously went on for years until their "new" phrasing saying that it's ok to not want a specific cock but you can't unilaterally say you don't want trans woman. Barf.

I think that's also when LA (and TL right? Which was solely for female lesbians but obviously no one needs our history) was created with the idea of a more general wlw focus, less trans talk and and more public/little moderation which then had a melt down because of mod drama and one of their mods being in an incestuous relationship with her twin sister, and then eventually they also stopped allowing user participation in moderation and now all their defining ideals are no longer in place and TL is obviously non-existent and the incest mod created a private sub which now also sucks because no one can actually say anything the moderators don't like and everyone acts like they're better than everyone in the public subs.

The End

I for sure remember Molly's drug use being a problem, I'm unsure if Freya did drugs too.

Edit: comment regarding Molly and drugs from a former AL mod who founded LA and refuses to work with Molly/Freya https://www.reddit.com/r/actuallesbians/comments/4v2zml/potential_change_in_leadership/d5v1t87/

[–]mangofruit 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Ah yes, ok, it was Molly with the drug issues. I still want to say it was Freya who did the ass coke just because I remember thinking at the time "wow, a shining example of trans issues" and I am 99 percent sure Molly is not trans. But, of course, it's been like 5 years since that happened and it was the internet, lol so who know if that recollection was correct.

edit to add: but also fuck Andy, she's a total psycho too and absolutely has repeatedly sold LA and her other mods down the river.

[–]ShotTopic 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Molly was added at a time they were intentionally looking for cis mods because Freya and some other mod (I forget who) were trans, and they wanted more balance.

[–]mangofruit 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Were they dating at that point or did they get together after both being mods? I honestly think it's weird that Freya is even still a mod there, I don't know if she ever comments or interacts.

[–]ShotTopic 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they were dating at the time Molly was added as a mod. I know they were in a long distance relationship and at one point made a post on AL about how excited they were to meet in person.
