Ben Appel is a fantastic writer! Last year, I read an amazing article he wrote in Quilette:

https://quillette.com/2021/07/08/as-a-gay-child-in-a-christian-cult-i-was-taught-to-hate-myself-then-i-joined-the-church-of-social-justice-and-nothing-changed/

It goes deeper into how cult-like the alphabet mafia is. Really insightful and sobering. Highly recommend!

Yeah, that one is quite good.

It really sounds like he was balancing on the razor's edge between 2 opposing pressures that were surprisingly alike, which were gradually crushing his spirit from both ends. Not surprising that he almost went mad from it all until the eventual turnaround.

Edit: His newsweek article just got tweeted by J.K.

This was painful to read, I struggled mentally in very similar ways. I'm so glad he put this out there.

It's good to have stories like this out in major publications. The general public needs to know what's going on with this shit and that it's homophobic and not supported by actual LGB.

In newsweek no less...brave guy. Hopefully comments will be on our side.

side note, there's an unrelated inbedded video about a gay man and transgender bill, what bill is he talking about?

A Missouri bill banning transgender males from competing on girls' sports teams.

oh that really effects him as a gay man huh

He is Democratic state Rep. Ian Mackey and he is opposing the Missouri bill banning transgender males from women's sports. I repeat: the idiot is speaking against it.

2017 was the year I also discovered I was no longer considered oppressed as a lesbian lol as if I was out advocating for marriage equality. I was so against that shit (I'm anti-marriage in general). Black women are the least married demographic... we're proud independent women. ✊🏾😆

But seriously... back in the 90s when crossdressing straight dudes were getting support on talk shows, LGB baby boomers and Gen X should've been preparing for the colonization of the community and started gatekeeping. Homosexual... and bisexual, I guess... gnc folks only! Just ask "have you seen Paris Is Burning?" Most straight folks who identify as trans haven't watched classic gay shit lol

We goldstars (including bi folks who haven't fucked the opposite sex) are the best gatekeepers... that's why we're so hated. We gatekeep our bodies and the community. 😁

It's LGB, dude, not "only LG people who are GNC."

Just ask "have you seen Paris Is Burning?" Most straight folks who identify as trans haven't watched classic gay shit lol

Maybe I'm too young for this question, but I haven't seen it and I'm still gay.

We goldstars (including bi folks who haven't fucked the opposite sex) are the best gatekeepers... that's why we're so hated. We gatekeep our bodies and the community.

Bisexual people who don't have sex with the opposite sex are no better or worse morally than ones who do. And if you want a "goldstars only" community, count me out. I was forced to date boys when I was a teenager by my lesbian-hating family, and I know I'm not the only homosexual person here who's had that kind of experience.

The gold star identity is silly and pointless. A gay friend who has never had sex with a woman hates it when gay men have the 'ewwww! A woman' or lesbians have the 'nasty men and their cocks!' mentality.

My gay and lesbian friends who have had sex with the opposite sex when they were not certain of their sexuality, knew but were closeted, etc. said how sex with the opposite sex just made them realise how they are gay/homosexual.

Paris is burning? That film was and is mainstream, and I wouldn't be surprised if trans and TRAs want it censored, especially this part where bi drag queen Pepper La Beija frankly and honestly says how transitioning will make your life worse.

I am so, so glad this article got written!! Saw it the other day and didn't get a chance to log on and post it. Really, really great. Debating whether I can safely share this one with some friends to start up a conversation about LGB rights and health.

I think the writer did a great job of conveying the experience of being LGB and trying to navigate transgender ideology. I know he was just describing his own experiences, but I found these passages really relatable:

At the time, I was exhausting so much mental energy memorizing my coworkers' pronouns and all of the new progressive dogmas out of fear that I would be fiercely condemned if I slipped up, I had none left to think critically or to question where any of these dogmas had even come from.

Today, the least-accepting spaces for people like me are, of all places, the halls of LGBT rights organizations, where the threat might not be violence but is nevertheless terrible stigmatization and shame.

Finally, someone who actually represents my LGB experience. Fucking preach, dude.
