I think there is also some self-selection because people quickly learn what they can and cannot say on the "main" subreddits. Some people learn by watching others receive downvotes and a pile-on in the comments and others learn by trial and error by unwittingly mentioning the unmentionable and being hit by the banhammer. In any case, once you find yourself on the other side of that line for one of the unmentionables (i.e. contravening reddit's go-to mantras taken as gospel) then you are more likely to start the questioning process in other areas. Peaking on an issue is kind of a never-ending process that forces you to constantly re-calibrate. There's always more. And having the veil lifted really stays with you.
