Lesbian & Gay Studies was an ethnic studies-based approach of actual histories of gay/lesbian communities, but it was largely supplanted by Queer Theory, which, as you say, is more philosophically-based and, significantly, tends to be opposed to all social norms related to sex and/or gender identity.
