I've re-written part of the article to actually make sense:

In a massive loss for LGB and gender-nonconforming people, Canada’s House of Commons passed a historic bill criminalizing any health profession from ever questioning a young person's gender identity.

Minister of Justice David Lametti tweeted that “if passed, #BillC6 will make Canada’s criminal laws look completely ass-backwards once the lid finally blows on what's going on surrounding LGBTQ+ politics, and we'll be scrambling like raving lunatics to undo this idiotic piece of legislation in the near future. We expect to be self-abasing in no time flat about how we 'didn't know' and really did a bang-up job of abdicating all responsibility by just believing what these activists told us.”

The perfectly reasonably psychotheraputic approach, refers to talk therapy for troubled youth who spend too much time on the internet and/or are subject to peer influence.

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, also tweeted: “I am a giant muppet. A handsome one, yes, especially with this sweet salt-and-pepper beard, but a giant muppet indeed."

The new bill would effectively fast-track minors to subject them to expensive and dangerous life-long medicalization process, and all the adults will be removed from the proverbial room.

The Queen's recent speech to UK parliament did touch briefly on equality rights, particularly for pidgeons to crap on anything they so choose.

Following the Queen’s speech, Liz Truss, Minister for Women and Equalities, tweeted that "we're going to make funding available to ensure that anyone who regrets transitioning is silenced, and to ensure that they cannot receive any meaningful healthcare to try and undo the damage we've since done."

Trudeau concluded, "My daddy was Prime Minister."

I was hoping he'd confess to being Fidel Castro's son.

Again, using gay people to promote their woke agenda. So some people are naturally same-sex attracted, and in the name of banning conversion therapy, we'll sneak in this self-ID "you can change your sex" BS.

So screaming that a MAN is in the women's bathroom will be "you're trying to convert him! Hate crime!" No. I'm trying to warn other women there is a mentally ill man in our bathroom.

Haha dude this is my favourite "believable" conspiracy. His resemblance to a younger Castro is quite astounding. I'm confident that he is the product of a threesome between the Trudeaus and Castro. Castro was notorious for being a womanizer/having an unhealthy sexual appetite

Margaret Trudeau was known for getting fuddleduddled by numerous men.

I do appreciate this unparliamentary reference.

They say Justin Trudeau is Fidel Castro's son, but then again, for all we know, his father could be one of the Beatles or some other man.

How does it benefit gay, lesbian or bisexual people to make it a criminal offence to warn women/men that a mentally ill man/woman is in the female/male changing rooms? This bill is extremely counterproductive. Thousands of young gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers will be transed only to later regret it, and we will be the ones blamed for it. It’s sad.

This is gold, hahahaha.

Is it going to ban all the trans the gay away shit and the "examine your genital preferences bigot!" shit? Because if not it's not banning conversion therapy at all, it's just reinforcing it.

I dont get the part that affects gays and lesbians. Wont conversion camps just open up again in different form? Yes or no. And please dont exagerrate for no reason. I'm genuinely curious. Transexualism is a form of conversion therapy but does this bill contain anti conversion therapy for gays/lesbian kids AND anti conversion therapy for transexualism? It's like being anti rape and then putting in pro rape elements within your bill. Is this what happened here or no?

The point of the bill is don't question, don't try and change orientation or gender identity. OR ELSE. Criminal liability.

Sexual orientation conversion therapy camps have been around in North America in recent time, still to this day, but the whole practice has really gone by the wayside. No medical professionals have anything to do with it, it's all religious stuff, and it's AFAIK rare, and usually aimed at adults.

This bill is riding on attitudes about sexual orientation conversion therapy, and if they left it at that, they'd have a good bill. But consider that there was no rush for this sort of legislation between the time that sexual orientation was viewed by the public as immutable and now. There's a large time gap there.

This bill strings along gender identity with it. Ultimately, the outcome is probably going to be a chilling effect such that no psychotherapist will ever even touch anyone who's got a gender identity thing going on--which gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are susceptible to. (Does that answer your question?) Further, anyone who speaks out against gender ideology will also be labeled as a proponent of conversion therapy since sexual orientation and gender identity are being conflated as being of the exact same nature.

Similar thing in the US's Equality Act, the conflation.

The great irony in this is that armed with a new gender identity, you can become heterosexual again. Many people regard this as just another form of conversion therapy, as you mentioned.

[–]slushpilot 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Exactly, it's the conflation of terms.

I think you're understanding it just fine. "Conversion therapy" as we know it is how it impacts those who are same-sex attracted. That's always what it's been about.

  • Conversion therapy for LGB is: you are not gay/lesbian/same-sex-attracted, that doesn't exist. Only heterosexuality is real. Don't explore or figure out why you feel this way, just fight it and eradicate it, nothing else exists. These are just urges, you are heterosexual and confused. Pray it away, slave it away, beat it away. And as a last resort, lets use medical intervention. We can remove it via cosmetic surgery and convincing you and the rest of society that only the opposite sex does what you do, so you are clearly that sex/gender. GO AWAY GO AWAY GO AWAY

  • Conversion therapy for gender identity is: you are not and will not become another sex/gender, you are one of the two and that doesn't change. You need to explore why why you feel this way and what led you to disassociating from them. You also need to understand how the mind-body connection changes throughout the course of human life and growth cycles. What is gender and what is sex, define it for yourself. Dig deep into the paths that come next, we will not use medical intervention until you fully and deeply understand and accept and consent to the consequences for now and the rest of your life. EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE

This bill (and many others like it) combine conversion therapy that impacts LGB with "gender identity", because LGB and TQ+ are all under the same umbrella. We are not the same, and approaches to supporting us are not the same.

TQ+ is a form of conversion therapy for LGB, yes, and hardly anyone is recognizing that. Except for the UK now, very slowly-but-surely because of the Keira Bell case.

The bill is a hot mess of contradictory language. I'm shocked at how many Conservative members voted for it. I was hoping more would vote against it, even if it might've been for the wrong (traditionalist) reasons. The bill reads:

“conversion therapy”, which is defined as practices, treatment or services designed to change an individual’s sexual orientation to heterosexual or gender identity to cisgender or to reduce non-heterosexual sexual attraction or sexual behaviour

It aims to simultaneously prohibit "conversion" of:

  • orientation to heterosexual
  • gender identity to cisgender

(But not the reverse, curiously.)

So as a therapist, consider counselling a 14-yo girl who tells you "I like girls and I hate my breasts... I am obviously a straight man!" A patient like this can be manipulative and say the right things in order to get the referral she wants.

If you try to unpack her confusion and help her work out if she might be a lesbian, and ultimately help her to accept her own healthy growing body, that would now be criminal. Hence, actually treating dysphoria with talk therapy is now something that can get you reported.

I can only see this leading to more harm to youth either way, since practitioners now only have two options:

  1. Affirm the patient's "identity", and let them lead their own course toward medical interventions. If the child's own self-assessment turns out to be wrong after they grow up and are old enough to start having sex, they can suffer with the consequences for life.

  2. Stay away and deny counselling services to the patient. The child is left to figure out their own underlying issues whether they might be related to depression, anxiety, trauma, or any other mental health condition on their own.

Now, I might just be worrying too much about this since the text of the bill specifies the word designed to try and limit what this applies to:

... services designed to change an individual’s ...

Obviously they don't mean talk therapy, right? I do wonder how many therapists would be willing to risk their reputation on that, when a petulant child can raise an internet mob to destroy their career with just the word "TERF".

This type of language is always used to push authoritarian agendas. Basically you connect some extreme examples to the target.

The barbaric practice – which has been discredited by the NHS and the World Psychiatric Association – refers to any attempt at changing a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity and often involves techniques such as electroshock therapy or prayer

Open by framing the issue as barbaric. Link in sexuality which people have broad acceptance for. The gender stuff is mentioned second. Then bring up electric shock as the method.

It hides the fact that it is primarily aimed at gender bs and attacking doctors for talking and attempting to work out psychological conditions.

If only this banned transbians from harassing lesbians
