I really think the root causes of this are people thinking LGB is a club you can join and biphobia. The former explains why we’re seeing everyone and his brother announce they’re lesbians and the latter explains the clearly bi people who are claiming to be gays and lesbians.

Yeah I definitely agree, biphobia and plain ignorance about the bi experience is a big part. I feel like the loudest bisexuals are strongly OSA-leaning, so Kinsey 4s and 5s can’t relate at all and just call themselves gay and lesbian, and then proceed to assume actual gays and lesbians feel as “fluid” or “complex” as they do. Which is how you get nonsense like “I’m a lesbian and my boyfriend is my exception” or “I’m gay and attracted to both men and trans men” like in the linked article, and attacking gays and lesbians of gate keeping or bigotry when they’re told no, that’s not actually a homosexual experience.

Yeah it’s definitely a stereotype that is perpetuated by lower-scale kinsey bisexuals because they tend to always dominate the conversations and visibility of bisexuality as well as uneducated straights and gays who say “if you’re mostly same-sex attracted then you’re gay in denial”. Which leads to these bisexuals identifying as gay/lesbian and further erasing themselves and fucking up everyone’s understanding of homosexuality and bisexuality in the process. Idk how it is with bi men but that’s what I’ve seen happen with lots of bi women. It’s kind of a vicious cycle unfortunately.

Yep that pretty much explains it and I've seen men do the same.
