I think it falls in line with his historically hands-off moderation, and on that basis I consider it reasonable

You're free to think that, but I personally respect his decision and I find wisdom in his words, especially when you have in mind that AGB was the only LGB space that allowed discussing this topic freely.

I personally admire his restraint, as in his place, I would have joined the protest without thinking, not considering that gay bros would be stripped of any space to discuss this.

That’s a a good point. But still, if the sub went private on the day most Reddit subs went private, then it would serve to mitigate backlash against gays.

My favourite sub is TrueCrime and I'm happy how they handled it. They didn't go dark but the stopped comments and left an explanation pinned. This ment that people out of the loop could understand what was going on (and its how I found out about it all)

No, but there were posts debating it. The small lesbian sub also issued a statement, but wasn’t added to the list of supporting subs even after the mods and others (including me) asked the list creator multiple times.
