I think it finally clicked for me today, though I've been collecting the facts for a while now, that these so-called "isolated" examples of homophobia are more systemic than I thought.

Any thoughts on why they are so homophobic? It seems at odds with being AAP/AHA.

Not OP but, from what I can tell, they're envious. Or at least, a lot of them are. This particular person's twitter account really made that click for me. She posts about both wanting to be thin and hating thin people, and clearly wants to be a gay man while posting about hating actual gay men. They're like incels, who hate 'chads' even though they clearly want to be one.

My personal theory is that these girls would have been the ones who would have dated closeted gay teenage boys. As our next generation is getting more empowered to reject them or not be coerced into pursuing them, they are becoming more unhinged. They feel slighted because it exposes how gay teenagers were previously used for their class of straight woman to practice their heterosexuality on.

Jealousy -> Resentment -> Anger

Wants to be X, knows they're not nor ever will be X, tries to shore that up with constant societal validation, fails, gets resentful, then angry.

fear (of never being an actual man) leads to anger (at the situation). Anger leads to hate (of gay men). And hate - leads to suffering.

This is the path to dark side (homphobia)
