One of my friends claims that two people of the same sex can't actually have sex, because there's no chance for procreation. He says, "Sure, I'll call it having sex, just to placate people, but I don't actually believe it." I bet a fair number of people hold this opinion. Totally floored me when he said it. Overall, I've found quite a diversity of opinion as to what "counts" as sex. It's wild. I'm still trying to come up with some sort of taxonomy that makes logical sense, but it really does seem to be a socially and culturally mediated concept... which may be why my friend is relying on procreation.

It is one of reasons why rape laws in many countries are often covering only PiV sex, and any other forced sex is not thought as a rape or serious crime by those laws.

So does he also think that it wouldn't be rape if another man fucked him against his will? And are "Gold Star" gay and lesbian porn stars virgins in his eyes?

I applied counterexamples like this, but he lost interest. His wife said that sex is anything that you can be prosecuted for--sexual assault--but that's of course a circular definition, because that's defined by society in the first place.
