Because they know they’re not the real target of those slurs, so they never have to feel any of the visceral discomfort. Even if the words were wielded against them because they were mistaken for gay (because most people believe trans people are homosexual) the fact that they know they’re not gay prevents them from internalizing the words and feeling the visceral discomfort and danger. The same reason why transwomen are thrilled by the prospect and experience of sexual harassment. Their minds are focused on validation, power/control, and basking in narcissistic glow.

Also throwing around the slur words is a way for them to wield control and simultaneously perform their role play. It also aids their goal of pretending that we’re on the other side of homophobia and biphobia, and that those slur words are now vestiges without power.

I agree with everything, but I think a lot of the people now occupying LGBTQIAWTF+ spaces genuinely do believe we're past homophobia, because they were fortunate enough to grow up in a progressive bubble where they never had to witness it. So the only injustices they see are trans people not having surgeries paid for on a whim and TV shows not having enough demisexual lithromantic representation.

where they never had to witness it.

Or they were being homophobes themselves, without realizing it, and thought it is something normal and not bad.

YUP. I think you've nailed it. I am a fairly progressive person but I'm always shocked when I talked to other progressive people and hear them suggest something like this. Like, hello? Do you realize there are many people in the world who don't believe in the views you hold?
