It seems like when people think they have a virtuous cause, it will justify the most horrific behavior. They lack the self awareness to see that they’ve become a monster.

Nah, they're just outcasts, suffering from depression or other mental illnesses, with no job or real friends who think that transition will solve all of their problems. They're really miserable.
