If people cared more about learning and self-improving than "being right" then it wouldn't matter. But the ego of looking all-knowing outweighs the ego of actually becoming wise, in modern American culture. Which might be a result of the focus on the short-term rather than the long-term.

But the ego of looking all-knowing outweighs the ego of actually becoming wise, in modern American culture
Its an intrinsically a human thing, we prefer feeling like we're right over having wisdom... Gaining knowledge and not just empty facts can be an uncomfortable experience undeniably because it requires that you listen to the stuff you don't agree with or which takes you out of your comfort zone

I'm not sure if it's human nature, or just modern culture... I really can't tell which it is, honestly. But the culture could certainly be better to encouraging those values, that's for sure. It's true that gaining knowledge can sometimes be uncomfortable though.
