He was fined for agreeing to a deal with a thumbs up. Then he tried to weasel out of it.

I agree with the court. If I got that response I would also assume he agreed to the contract.

Not only that, but the farmer never followed up, indicating that he too considered the the matter resolved. Sounds like the farmer did that on purpose to have a contract but also try to sell the grain for more latter if he could. If he can't find a buyer who will pay more he would argue that the contract was valid. His little scam didn't pan out.

I'm sure he could appeal. Emoticons are generally used to convey feelings and abstract concepts. No emoji exists for I agree to the terms and conditions laid out in the aforementioned contract. Still new territory as far as contractual law exists.
