I learned this week that there is estimated to be enough lithium on the planet to make about 2 billion cars total. Which is a lot, but not really when you think of the scale of our species. IMO hydrogen and nuclear are the only real options we have.

Almost certainly there are important inventions yet to happen that could help too, but it hasn't been a priority.

In the US any real R&D into H2 was killed off by the Obama admin. That, plus the wars - trillions of $ wasted and millions of man-hours thrown away on surveillance and death. There hasn't been any real groundbreaking tech from the US since the net. Imagine if the US actually invested time and money in real energy independence - it would happen. But that's not important to those in power.
