Of the 11 dietary factors considered, three had an outsized contribution to the rising global incidence of type 2 diabetes:

Insufficient intake of whole grains,

No, 'lack of whole grains' does not cause diabetes, though it is less likely to cause diabetes than refined carbohydrates

excesses of refined rice and wheat,

Yes, and also obviously sugar

and the overconsumption of processed meat.

I... don't think so. Processed meats contain nitrites which are credibly linked with colon cancer, but I have never heard of this association with type-2 diabetes. Doing a search of the literature, I can find only a single study from this year, which has never been cited by anyone, which appears to be what this article is referring to

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36649248/

While I could not another study to support this, what I did find was a study saying nitrites DECREASED the risk for type-2 diabetes that has been cited by 81 other studies

I am gonna say this link with nitrites and type-2 diabetes sounds very fucking dubious, it seems better supported as a treatment for type-2 diabetes than a cause. Though yes, diet is obviously the cause of type-2 diabetes, I would not take this advice seriously.

I agree that diet is the cause, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what. I have read about many potential causes, ultra processed foods, saturated fats, high fructose corn syrup being a few. Not sure about the nitrites but there are potential links to cancer.

The study was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Also something to keep in mind.

Yeah I'm with you on the nitrites and cancer, that seems well supported in the literature.

The study was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Hahahah that explains a lot, though I'm glad they put the part in about refined carbs, that was actually solid. Its not clear all the things that cause t-2 diabetes, but all the processed carbs and sugars are definitely part of it.

Theres a lot of misinformation from big food flying around, I tend to default towards skepticism when I read these things, especially if BMGF is involved, they have a history of this kind of statistical tomfoolery

So what you're saying is that people who don't eat beets are terrible human beings?

Nicely researched. You get an upvote.

Imagine my surprise. Let's tell everyone to eat lots of refined simple carbohydrates as the mainstay of their diet what could go wrong.

No I'm certain you're wrong, bigot. They've all just got a thyroid condition.

Sadly, nearly all dietary science is fraudulent.
