This is random, but I have a family member married to an Italian who thinks they are in a biracial relationship and were victims of racism. I wonder if part of it is older generations, having faced bigotry/persecution based on ethnicity where society didn't consider them white (certainly obvious in the case of Jewish people, perhaps less so the Italians), are still holding on to that in modern culture where the dividing line of non-white seems to have shifted to a more literal interpretation of skin color regardless of ethnic origin.

The anti-intersectionality thing was vocalized at GC prior to our banning, too. Just because someone is aware of their own oppression, doesn't mean they are self-aware and willing to recognize their own biases and bigotry, yet. There was always a bit of cognitive dissonance and pushback when the discussion of race issues came up in GC. The women who split off for gc_woc weren't wrong about their criticisms of racism, and I wish we were better and more aware of that as a community. I was disappointed to see the intersectionality criticisms appearing here, as well.

I have a problem with intersectionality discourse, even though I appreciate that there's good reasons behind it.

My problem is that Tumblr soured me to it with their "you're not a feminist unless you're fighting for the causes of people with disabilities, mental illnesses, micro-gender identities, sex workers rights" etc etc ad nauseum. I have a finite amount of fucks to give and yes, I'm going to prioritize my fucks on the things that impact me and my loved ones. But the social justice warriors aren't having that. They feel entitled to your energy, to everyone's energy, all the time and for every single cause. It seemed in those spaces that women were being asked to care about every issue except for sexism. That's the behemoth intersectionality turned into and it really pissed me off.

I think it's important to understand that souring. It has a lot to do with the way white woke culture took over intersectional ideas and made a very toxic environment from it. It doesn't mean those issues don't matter or that racism isn't important (and important to discuss how race and sex intersect, in the original sense of intersectionality). It's that people have very different meanings and experiences of what intersectionality looks like.

I completely understand the souring toward intersectionality as was appropriated by the woke crowd - I said the same in the thread in question. I also disagree with it's current evolution by those using it as a political weapon. The point is that people having different meanings and experiences of intersectionality is that colonization - the original term is still very useful and shouldn't be demonized; we should be directing the negativity toward those who have colonized it and not the term itself. That's not to say anyone has to prioritize black feminism (or in the currently used version any other type of feminism - feminism focusing on the disabled or mentally ill) or anything other than what feminism is most important to you (the royal you, not you specifically), but the negativity toward the term itself does send a message of indifference to other women's (specifically and historically not white middle/upper class women's) experiences.
