Why are more women in BDSM, though? You seem familiar with the community — what's your take?

I don't know where you got the idea, but there are roughly equal numbers of men and women among the BDSM community. Indeed, in the open scene there are less women in evidence than men, mainly because a lot of women still prefer to engage in their sexual expressions privately.

The sheer numbers of people into one or another form of BDSM approach 8-10% of the population and people harbouring fantasies of BDSM can amount to 50% of the population. Equal amounts of women and men.

I'm not familiar with the community, just foolishly studied psychology. I am not an essentialist so I would think the explanation lies in constructed gender roles. That is, maybe many women value a strong dominant force as society prescribes, so that becomes fetishized as sexual pleasure.

There are yet many who believe these kinds of things are essential, that is women are naturally submissive and therefore seek such sexual experiences. I don't buy that, but think as you will

Another fallacy right there. BDSM does not equal "women in passive/submissive roles". There are as many women in the active (dominant, Top) role as men. It spreads pretty much equally across the board within each gender, too (33% active to 66% passive). There are slight variations between different countries and cultures, but in general this sort of distribution stays pretty much the same.
