I'm not familiar with the community, just foolishly studied psychology. I am not an essentialist so I would think the explanation lies in constructed gender roles. That is, maybe many women value a strong dominant force as society prescribes, so that becomes fetishized as sexual pleasure.

There are yet many who believe these kinds of things are essential, that is women are naturally submissive and therefore seek such sexual experiences. I don't buy that, but think as you will

Another fallacy right there. BDSM does not equal "women in passive/submissive roles". There are as many women in the active (dominant, Top) role as men. It spreads pretty much equally across the board within each gender, too (33% active to 66% passive). There are slight variations between different countries and cultures, but in general this sort of distribution stays pretty much the same.
