Only the very wealthy really married for this reason. Poorer people have always been much more likely to marry for love/companionship (at least in a western context).

There are multiple evolutionary hypotheses concerning homosexuality and bisexuality in humans. Probably the most well-known is the 'gay uncle theory'. The following article calls it the 'helper in the nest' hypothesis

That's an interesting theory, I'd never heard that before, either. It's kind of sweet, actually, it would be nice if it really is true.
