Something I have learned is that for many, morality is a luxury. As soon as times get tough, lessons like those go out the window in lieu of short-term survival, and everyone is worse off for it. I'm seeing the same pattern in the US.

It's easier to be neighborly when things are going great, I guess. It makes sense on a certain level, but it also has a lot of consequences.
