It only has value, because the gun pointed at your face. If there wasn't people would counterfeit it more often. In fact, it would surprise me if China didn't print US currency in large amounts. It's not like the technology of "producing currency" is more advanced than building microchips.

Mainstream seems to count using the lightning network as "accepting bitcoin": https://watcher.guru/news/the-largest-south-african-supermarket-chain-pick-n-pay-now-accepts-bitcoin
The security offered by the bitcoin network is complete overkill for transactions of low value. I suspect that litecoin and monero would also require something like lightning at scale.
