Something about this story does not add up. Why did the pilot punch out of a perfectly good jet that still flew on autopilot another 70 miles? How was his life in imminent danger? From what? Any ideas?

Unless I'm mistaken bailing out of a 75 million dollar jet without your life in immediate danger would be a bad thing for your career. I'm no flyboy so I fail to understand what made this pilot pull up the eject stick and bail when the plane was still flying. He could not have known in what place the plane would crash and dang lucky it was in a farmers field instead of city outskirts into buildings.
