First off I want to say that I actually agree there is something fishy here, but I don't think where you are looking.

I do think the F-35 gets a bit more hype than is warranted, largely because they have to recoup the price by selling to foreign allies. Issues often get swept under the rug, downplayed or are distracted by other stories like this.

That said, I can think of dozens of reasons a pilot might eject and somehow the jet continues on autopilot for 70 miles. He doesn't have the benefit of knowing it's about to make it another 70 miles. It might look like it's about to fail eminently and then miraculously doesn't. Sensors could be indicating something worse than reality or perhaps the plane just miraculously lasted longer than it should have.

My car drove at least 800 miles last year while my engine mounts had completely rusted out. I had no idea except a bunch of warning lights that came on about 600 miles into it. It's a miracle my engine didn't just slip out, but somehow it just rested on the shocks and kept me going for way longer than my mechanic would have ever thought possible. Real life doesn't behave exactly the way you expect no matter how much you look at the data. Sometimes a stray spark causes a massive wildfire in a damp and rainy season, sometimes an entire box of matches wont start your expertly built campfire.

I find the story itself plenty believable, it's just the plane itself I don't trust. The "cutting edge" F-35 Lightning II is remarkably susceptible to electronic and electrical warfare. That last bit is a dig at how it apparently can't fly during lightning storms. You heard that right. It's called the Lightning II and it absolutely shits the bed in a lightning strike.

A thoughtful reply unlike others. Thanks.

Unless I'm mistaken bailing out of a 75 million dollar jet without your life in immediate danger would be a bad thing for your career. I'm no flyboy so I fail to understand what made this pilot pull up the eject stick and bail when the plane was still flying. He could not have known in what place the plane would crash and dang lucky it was in a farmers field instead of city outskirts into buildings.

nah the pilot was a diversity negro, he will be given a medal for bravery

Autopilot misgendered they/them.

Wasp in the cockpit

From the preliminary chatter I've seen, they are talking about the plane being "hacked". If a third party gained control over the operational software of the aircraft, suddenly the pilot no longer has control. The plane maybe started performing maneuvers he could not control and could not stop. It wouldn't take too many minutes of this kind of stress before anyone would conclude this was a life threatening situation, to be in an airplane of which they no longer had control. Thus the bail. I know less than nothing about this, but this is my rank speculation on the theory of piloting a "hacked" aircraft mid-flight.

Don't worry. John Kirby promised that after a full investigation, the Air Force will be completely truthful and honest in its report.

The raptor apparently has a major issue with the oxygen supply. Several pilots have passed out due to lack of oxygen and many refuse to fly it.

It is possible that something like that happened, or there was an electrical failure that caused the pilot to lose all control because it is fly by wire.

The latter sounds more plausible because clearly the transmitter wasn't working either.

A nice reply thanks with a reasonable conclusion. Not that I think for one moment the military will tell anyone really WTF happened.

Some sort of automatic shutdown if unauthorized takeoffs/flyzones/commands are input that will prompt the jet to autodestruction.

Perhaps find a news source that is credible next time.

The problem was the mouse had been taken over by the ccp.

Anyone remember the movie Stealth? Cause this is the plot of the movie Stealth. Jessica Biel's finest work! (Chef's kiss)

Anyway, I don't know. I didn't even know this was a news story until now.
