I remember a 1960's Dr. Who episode making fun of "flat Earther's" by name. It's a very long running joke, well known to be silly to believe. This is a valuable tool to associate one's rivals with. The lame tactic is, "my opponent or political rival, is associated with <everything bad>."
The general public is so poorly educated, that finding something to plug in <everything bad>, without having to explain it to them, gets tricky. You can only call your opponent racist/sexist/authoritarian so many times.
