Answer to your thesis:

Yes - re. the non-paying customer

No - re. the paying customer, who is also the product

Much of what you do on line, in public, and while carrying a phone, makes you the product - because companies want to buy data that references your movements and activities.

This is well-known. Perhaps you could AskSaidit something that's more specific.
