What is wrong with the term "truther"? How did the community get divided and repulsed by this term? I know there are some wacky ideas, but it need not destroy the whole movement. Old history I guess, but I completely missed that chapter.

its just a label to discredit people like conspiracy theorist, holocaust denier, climate change denier, anti-vaxxer etc... it doesn't matter what it means, what it represents or even if it's accurate, it's just a political weapon used to discredit people. Avoid these propaganda terms like the plague. Don't use them, don't respond to them and if someone insists on pressing you on it just ask them what they think it means and talk about the term objectively and sensibly. It's modern newspeak.

I'm a proud truther, truth-seeker, and conspiracy analyst. I'm also a cis white male, anti-war, and anti-Zionist. Call me other things if you like, but they lack credibility to those who know.
"Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."
Sure, I know there are "truther" idiots who believe in holograms and Flat Earth, intentionally or ignorantly trying to discredit truth-seekres. So what? There are people who believe a lot of crazy shit in politics, religion, science, etc.
I still like the "truther" label. It's short, catchy, to the point, and the stigma only applies if you let it. Labels help when defining things and working on concepts. Sure labels and stereotypes, like anything, can be helpful and/or harmful. Simply being aware of the manipulation can help keep you ahead.

fair enough if the label serves you then go with it. I think it originated from the 9/11 truth movement

I don't even know what years it occurred / got corrupted.
Obviously there's not a well documented history of it on Wikipedia, etc.

It is traced to the 911 Truth movement, ultimately. Truthers came into the mainstream with the release of documentarys like Loose Change in 2005. This put the establishment in a difficult position. They were already facing alot of criticism over the War on Terror, and the claims of a 9/11 False Flag seemed to amplify the anti-war movement. The establishment scrambled to undermine the 911 Truthers, and one of the ways they did this was by stigmatising that label.
