I basically agree with you, OP. That's probably the biggest problem for now. The only way to change that is to post more things that aren't just related to topics like free speech or politics. Oftentimes it only takes a few little nudges for an interesting conversation to happen or some activity in a community. More cute cats, interesting art, music, architecture, fandoms, etc would help prevent this site from ghettoizing itself as a perpetual reaction to Reddit and instead turn it into a proper community in its own right.

Exactly! That's what I'm slowly trying to do. Can you recommend any existing light subs that can use more cute or funny things? Or generate good discussion?
