Hermit crabs.

I like them because they are weirdos like me. They'll climb the cables of the thermometer and hydrometer and then go STRAIGHT BACK DOWN.

They'll try to climb up the glass aquarium for like five minutes trying to figure out if they can.

They climb on top of each other for the lolz.

They'll climb everywhere and sometimes fall off (unharmed) which is hilarious.

They live in snail shells which is really interesting.

In the wild, one may find a shell slightly too big for them and wait next to it. Progressively smaller crabs will them form a queue next to them. Once a crab in a slightly smaller shell than the biggest comes around, the large crabs will switch into the biggest shell, causing the next big crab to switch into their previous shell, and the line follows so that they all get a suitably sized shell. They are more intelligent than we often give credit.

They are also quite understudied in the biological science community, which makes observing them so much more interesting, as their behavior is not very well understood.

I was once incredibly disgusted and spooked out by spiders, I wouldn't touch them. But the cuteness and observation of hermit crabs has helped me overcome this irrational fear, as they are eight-legged and similar to spiders.

They eat most "natural" food. I give them peanut butter as a treat sometimes.

Apparently, they can form a connection with people. Learning to tolerate handling and even understand when we give them food. (They will wait by the dish when the nightly feeding approaches).

They can also live for over 70 years. The oldest hermit crab in captivity, 'Jonathan Livingston Crab', is currently 42 years-old. Taking good care of them can be a lifetime experience.

I'm planning on getting a cat and a dog once I finish schooling and have a decent career. I love cats and dogs, but my favourite creature so far is the hermit crab. Incredibly interesting animals and it's always so much fun to watch and play with them.
