Let me try and explain why learn to code (at least my perspective). If it's true that there is a pattern of information technologies connecting humans more and more - storytelling -> writing -> books -> printing press/newspaper -> telephone/radio -> TV -> Internet -> ??? ... Then programming might be a new paradigm just like reading/writing and grammar were back in the day when books started to become popular during the middle ages (not sure of exact date, but there was some point that everyone went from illiteracy to literacy).
