Professor Peter Turchin predicts that the 2020s will be a period of societal instability. Coronavirus, the lockdowns, and the riots seem to be proving him right. Whatever the case, the coming decade will have striking differences to the ones before it, and will require different modes of behavior. My suggestions are below, but I'd like to hear yours in the comments.
Seriously consider your options before going to university. Don't put yourself thousands of dollars in debt just for a piece of paper. Only go if the value you'll get from the degree is more than the money you're paying for college. Usually this means a degree in STEM or Law.
Avoid major cities except for money-making and networking opportunities. They are too socially and politically unstable, and tend to be hotspots for disease. If you must work in a city, either commute, or save up enough to move somewhere else later in life.
Stock up on several months worth of food and other necessities. Rice is cheap and will keep for years. Preparing like this helped many people during the lockdowns.
Look into alternate forms of currency, like crypto or precious metals, as well as other ways to protect your assets in the case of hyperinflation or recession.
Have a big family. This means both having kids and keeping ties with grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and other extended family. Family provides a safety net, both economic and social, in times of need.
In addition to family, make many friends. Social isolation is the scourge of the 21st century. Don't hide away at home watching Netflix or browsing the Internet. Attend social events in your local community. Be friendly and outgoing, and meet as many people as you can.
Limit screen time, both for yourself and your family. In the next few years, Internet addiction is going to go through the roof. Don't be a victim - find more productive hobbies, such as hiking or exercise. Make sure your family and friends are involved as well.
Own your own land. If you must rent, do it strategically, and only if it provides you with more value in the long-run. Owning land should be your ultimate goal, because it frees you from the limitations of renting.
Don't feel ashamed if you live at a family member's house. Likewise, stay close to other members of your family, and take them in if they need it. The concept of every individual needing to own their own place is ideal, but unrealistic if money gets tight, which could happen in a coming depression.
Grow your own food, and provide for your own needs as much as possible. If you can't make something yourself, try to get it from a neighbor.
Know who your neighbors are and be on good terms with them. Be involved in your community. Be a local leader if possible.
Boycott major corporations as much as possible. Buy from small or local businesses instead.
Be familiar with technology and learn the basics of coding.
