In the middle ages they didn't have our psychological explanations for serial killers or paedos so they had to rely on magical or religious ideas to explain horrific crimes.

This case might seem bizarre but if a Christian had been caught killing a child they and likely much of their family and friends would have been labelled werewolves or witches which is even more unlikely than ritual killing.
