When I got older, my parents wanted to move farther north into the country. I remember, during the searching process, we visited a house that my mom was interested in but my father quickly and adamantly protested because it was literally across the street from a landfill (the wind wasn't blowing towards the property that day I guess).

We ended up living somewhere much greener but as coincidence would have it, some neighbors (with kids my age) did end up moving into that house.

Boring story short, that landfill, to this day, smells for about a mile when passing it directly adjacent to the freeway and I'm so fortunate that my father had a little foresight (although he worked his ass off for the alternative).
