It's more about 'who would you rather be' and not accepting who you are. Which is sad. Also, were you to ask me, i'd also think that whatever reasons are causing the current inability of people to be their own person, a strong male or strong female, and relating to one another as such are also causing misplaced feelings of idolization of the other gender which translates in want to 'be' that sex, instead of experiencing the feeling through the other person.

The Blue Lagoon should be mandatory viewing. Raise a male and a female in cultural isolation from the current 20's trends and influences, and they will come out as male and female.
