AA's success rate is hard to judge because of the anonymity, but estimates are at around 5% and the guys it does work for tend to become kind of cultish.

Seems to work better for those who are religious, since it's built around that mostly.

I've heard psychedelics have great success rates, like 30%, for overcoming alcohol addiction. At least according to early studies on mushrooms, I think it was

They found it helps the person step outside their addiction mindset and see the bigger picture more easily, including better seeing the upsides to quitting and the downsides to remaining addicted

A lot of people recoil from the higher power aspect of AA. Some groups are more religious than others, I knew a guy who said their higher power was a coffee mug and nobody cared.

LSD was originally the 13th step, not banging girls in recovery, but Bill W. couldn't get that shit to fly. AA according to the founder is supposed to be done in conjunction with psychedelics.

AA tells us that we have to hit rock bottom before we can quit. I don't believe that, but there's a point to it, you have to really want to quit, because it's highly unpleasant. If you don't want it enough, you're wasting your time.

Yeah everyone's "rock bottom" is different... It's sort of definitional that you'll hit your personal rock bottom as the moment you decide to quit. Usually the worst moment of it someone has ever experienced, is the precipitating event to turn things around.

I think mushrooms probably work better than LSD for overcoming addiction. But it probably depends on the person.
